Protect Your Stone, Keep a Natural Look: A Simple Guide to Sealers
________
Natural stone brings stunning, unique character to floors, countertops, and outdoor areas. However, because stone is naturally porous (like a sponge), it needs protection to stop it from absorbing spills, dirt, and moisture.
At Onyx Surface Care & Tools, we recommend natural look sealers, which are almost always penetrating formulas. These products soak deep into the stone, bonding within its pores to create a lasting protective barrier. This protection occurs within the stone, so it won’t alter the natural colour, dull the surface, or make it slippery. Unlike surface coatings, these sealers will not peel, yellow, or flake.
Here are three top-tier natural-look options to keep your stone looking spectacular.
1. Actichem DEFENDER CSD 50: The Stone Strengthener
What it is:
Actichem DEFENDER CSD 50 is a specialised soaking sealer that works as both a consolidator and a water repellent. It is a clear, ready-to-use liquid that is Class 3 Flammable and has a solvent fragrance. This sealer creates an extremely strong bond deep inside the stone.
When to Use It:
This product is highly recommended for materials that need structural support or protection from erosion. It is most popular for porous construction materials such as sandstone, limestone, clay, and concrete structures. It is particularly suited for heritage buildings, monuments, and delicate or crumbling stone. Since it is UV stable, it is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use.
Why It’s a Good Choice for You:
If your stone is old, soft, or showing signs of wear, Defender CSD 50 is an ideal choice because it consolidates loose material and significantly increases the strength of the substrate, improving its longevity. It offers powerful water repellency, which stops damage caused by salt, mineral deposits, and mould. For limestone it provides unparalleled strengthening and keeps water out. This is a highly durable product, offering premium protection that can last for up to 15 years or even longer.

What it is:
Aqua Mix Sealer’s Choice® Gold – Rapid Cure is a premium-grade, high-performance sealer that soaks into the stone. It is a safe-to-use, water-based formula with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It is designed to penetrate well, even into dense surfaces that don’t absorb easily.
When to Use It:
Use this sealer on all interior and exterior natural stone, tile, and grout surfaces, including granite, marble, slate, and concrete. It is specially made to provide maximum stain protection, making it perfect for food preparation and serving areas (like busy kitchens or dining zones). If you need fast results, the new Rapid Cure formula protects the surface in less than 4 hours.
Why It’s a Good Choice for You:
Choose this product for maximum protection against stains. It is designed to last for up to 15 years. A major benefit is the built-in Microban® technology, meaning the cured sealer is resistant to mould and mildew. This premium option gives you peace of mind in high-risk areas like kitchens, where spills and moisture are common.

3. Aqua Mix Penetrating Sealer: The Economical Essential
What it is:
Aqua Mix Penetrating Sealer is an economical, water-based sealer that soaks into the stone and leaves a natural, no-sheen finish. It is a non-VOC formula that provides excellent protection and allows moisture vapour to pass through the stone (Moisture Vapour Transmission).
When to Use It:
This sealer is great for general use on all porous natural stone, tile, and grout surfaces. It is particularly recommended for very porous stone and tile, such as concrete, sandstone, and brick. It can also be used before grouting. It is a suitable choice if you need reliable protection, but maximum stain protection (like that offered by Sealer’s Choice® Gold) is not required. It works both indoors and outdoors.
Why It’s a Good Choice for You:
This is an economical and reliable choice for general sealing needs. It is easy to use and provides excellent protection while maintaining the natural, no-sheen look of your surface. It is a dependable, budget-conscious option that typically lasts for up to 5 years.

Important Limitations and What Sealers Cannot Do
While penetrating sealers provide critical protection, it is important to understand their limits so you can properly care for your stone long-term:
• Sealants Don’t Stop Etching or Wear: A sealer will not prevent the surface wear caused by foot traffic. Most importantly, the sealer will not prevent etching (surface damage) caused by contact with acids or caustic chemicals (like vinegar, lemon juice, or strong cleaners).
• They Aren’t Waterproof Coatings: Actichem Defender CSD 50, for example, is not to be used as sub-terrain waterproofing.
• You Must Still Clean Up Spills: Even with a sealer applied, it is still crucial to wipe up any spills or standing liquids promptly, especially on countertops.
• Application Rules are Strict: Sealers require proper application. For example, Actichem Defender CSD 50 should not be applied if the temperature is above 40°C or if rain is expected within 2 hours. If rain has occurred, the surface must be allowed to dry completely for 24 hours before application.
• White Film Warning: If the sealer is accidentally allowed to dry on the surface (instead of being wiped away), a white film may form. If this happens, the surface must be scrubbed using Aqua Mix® NanoScrub® and a white nylon pad to remove the residue.
• High-Risk Areas Need Premium Sealer: The economical Penetrating Sealer is not recommended for food preparation areas or where the highest level of stain protection is needed; in those cases, the premium Aqua Mix® Sealer’s Choice® Gold is recommended.
Think of a natural stone sealer like applying a coat of clear, specialised sunscreen to your skin. It soaks in and defends against moisture and stains, helping the surface last longer and look better. However, just like sunscreen, it doesn’t make the surface indestructible; you still need to avoid sharp scratches (wear) and harsh chemical burns (etching) to keep it truly protected.
